THE BATTLE ON BERGISELIN Tyrolean marksmen against women with rifles Since time immemorial (that is, since 1809), there have been no female marksmen among the Tyrolean shooters. This could have changed in January 2026, but it did not. 86.96 percent of the shooting community voted against allowing women to use rifles. The election result triggered a media storm and made headlines beyond Tyrol's borders. Even in Vienna, reports appeared: "The Tyrolean shooters celebrate their first victory since the Battle of Bergisel. With an overwhelming majority, they decisively repelled the treacherous attack of equality. The enemy, the 21st century, was successfully pushed back behind the Arlberg." (Die Tagespresse) The shooting federation found the unexpected publicity not funny and responded with a clarification: They did not vote against women, but for tradition – that is, for traditional gender roles as part of cultural heritage.
