What's it about?

The usually 'diminutive' material is here told in its original form as a fairy tale for children and adults. The well-known story narrates the transformation of a 'mermaid' into a land dweller out of 'love' and ultimately into a 'air-being'. Only by renouncing violence does the mermaid discover a world she previously did not know. Thus, although she bears the wounds of her 'self-sacrifice' at the end, she gains the ability to move between different worlds. Andersen's art fairy tale, in today's interpretation, offers the opportunity to include a variety of 'worlds and people' in the project. An 'underwater world' populated by sea creatures, nymphs, corals, jellyfish, sea monsters, witches, and fantasy beings makes gender assignments and categories like 'disabled' and 'not disabled' difficult or impossible. A 'superficial water' inhabited by princesses and princes, kings, and a quirky court makes it a rich setting for the story.
