Shortly before his 50th birthday, the San Francisco-born, New York-based trombonist presents this pleasantly apocalyptic ensemble music, complex, strenuous and agitated, as befits end-time music, live at the Jazzfestival in Saalfelden. The fact that the top-class original line-up of the first album with all three super guitarists, namely Mary Halvorson, Brandon Seabrook and Jonathan Goldberger, will be heard, speaks not only for the busy leader, but of course above all for his compositions. "One Can Only Go Up", as the opener is called.
