Shortly after her move from Madrid to New York in 2011, supported by a Fulbright scholarship, Marta Sanchez founded her quintet, which will be joined by trumpeter Cuong Vu this evening. The stunning and extensively composing pianist, last year's "Rising Star" of Downbeat and well-known alongside David Murray, loves melodies, she recently told JazzTimes magazine, but "harmony is just as important. If you put a melody - which is beautiful but predictable - over a harmony that is darker and unexpected, the musical power shifts to the harmony. And that's when the piece becomes interesting."
