Hubert von Goisern X Lungau Big Band
What's it about?
Hubert von Goisern is expanding his 2027 tour with another chapter: after "Zu Leise?" and "Zu Laut!" he will perform 12 concerts in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany in the fall, featuring songs arranged for large ensemble from his over three-decade-long repertoire. For him personally, this completes a circle: "With the Big Band, I experience a very special pleasure. I sit in the middle of the orchestra, so I have the best seat in the hall and rediscover my songs." Since the first joint performances in 2022/23, the powerful collaboration between Hubert von Goisern and the Lungau Big Band has filled concert halls in Austria and Germany to capacity — crowned in 2023 and 2024 by the live album "Blech, Balg & Holz" and a widely watched broadcast from the Graz Orpheum on ORF. The fact that this collaboration even happened is mainly thanks to the persistence of bandleader Horst Hofer: "Horst kept asking me and simply wouldn't let go. That impressed me — when someone is so persistent about an idea, there must be something to it. I agreed on the condition that Burkhard Frauenlob would do the arrangements and play keyboard. That was the prerequisite for me to embark on this adventure." Burkhard Frauenlob serves as the musical bridge between both worlds: he played in Hubert von Goisern's band for many years and has been a pianist and arranger for the Lungau Big Band for decades. Most of the arrangements for the joint program are his work. For fall 2027, the program will be expanded with new pieces from Hubert von Goisern's repertoire. Hubert von Goisern was surprised at how well his music works in this format — he originally did not want a Big Band: "I never thought my sound would fit so well into this format. For example, the song 'Herschauen' was created in 2007 during a ship tour with a Bulgarian Roma group onboard — the entire Balkan brass sound comes from there. When I hear it now with the Big Band, I am suddenly back on the Danube." The seemingly effortless effect is also due to the history of the ensemble itself: the Lungau Big Band has been around for over forty years, and its current core lineup has played together for about twenty years. "With six or seven people, you can change arrangements and structure on the fly. With a Big Band, you need pencil and eraser. You have to plan much more precisely — but once it clicks, it creates a pressure that no wide keyboard sound can replace." Interpreted with brass, wind, and wood, the sound takes on a new character — oscillating between tradition and musical innovation. Each concert evening offers familiar pieces and musical surprises, forming a concert tour through Hubert von Goisern's musical work. TWO MUSICAL DRIVING FORCES Hubert von Goisern is a musician driven primarily by curiosity. His distinctive musical language is rooted in the harmonica, yodeling, and the original sound of the Alps, as well as in international influences — but it never stands still. Hubert von Goisern has envisioned folk music for large stages, pushed boundaries, and continues to be on the move, always searching for new sounds, experiences, and encounters. LUNGAU BIG BAND The Lungau Big Band has been active for over forty years and is one of Austria's most renowned and respected jazz ensembles. It features internationally acclaimed soloists — including Nils Landgren, Randy Brecker, Gunhild Carling, and James Morrison — invites composers for new programs, and is known for its exceptional continuity.
