Franz Schubert's Winterreise is one of the most famous and moving song cycles in music history: on 24 songs based on poems by Wilhelm Müller, Schubert depicts the lonely journey of a wanderer through a winter landscape marked by loss and longing. The performers are the bass Thomas Stimmel and the pianist Liese Klahn. Thomas Stimmel, based in the Salzburg region, is an internationally active bass singer and is at home in opera, oratorio, and concert singing. He studied in Munich and Berlin, performed at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, and worked with conductors such as Philippe Herreweghe and Jordi Savall. Liese Klahn is one of the experienced song accompanists in her field. She studied with Eliza Hansen and Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, was a chamber music partner of, among others, Sabine Meyer, and gave song recitals with singers like Thomas Quasthoff and Juliane Banse. This evening also marks the opening of the new concert series "Odeïon klingt": The Odeïon will increasingly host its own events again – Winterreise thus marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Odeïon’s cultural program. The proceeds from this concert will benefit the Odeïon and enable the continuation of the concert series.
