Drama for Young Audiences | Classic Today Biedermann und die Brandstifter by MAX FRISCH recommended from age 12 REGIS Dora Schneider A house, an attic, two guests - and gasoline barrels. Gottlieb Biedermann knows what is going on here. After all, everyone is talking about it and the outrage is great: arsonists who sneak in, gain trust, set fires, and threaten the safe life. And yet he invites them in. Out of politeness. Out of fear. Out of habit. One doesn't want to be inhumane and has good manners. And anyway: who wants to make enemies? What follows is as absurd as it is logical: Biedermann even supplies the matches. Between bourgeois facade and smoldering catastrophe, a game of repression, justification, self-deception, and silent complicity unfolds. You watch and suddenly realize that you have long been part of it. In Biedermann und die Brandstifter, Max Frisch draws a parable of sharp wit and disturbing clarity. The boundaries between perpetrators and spectators blur, the catastrophe is imminent - and no one intervenes. Similar to Michael Haneke's film Funny Games, the horror does not arise from the unknown, but from what we allow. Frisch's play poses the uncomfortable question: Why do we not act, even though we already know what is happening? The production is aimed at both a teenage audience and adults.
