What's it about?
With Glamours, My Son The Doctor deliver ten fast, loud, and catchy indie-rock songs, ranging from 90s slacker rock to 2000s pop-punk, shaped by the New York DIY scene and situated between Pavement and Jane's Addiction. Support on October 8: Flirtmachine. The result of a musical collaboration spanning almost a decade, the songs on Glamours reflect the direct – and at times feverish – approach of Brian Hemmert (vocals), Joel Kalow (guitar), Matt Nitzberg (bass), and John Mason (drums) to songwriting and on stage. Forged in the melting pot of the New York DIY scene, where the band regularly performed with local greats like Bodega, Gustaf, and Teenage Halloween, the album's ten tracks bundle their nerve-wracking energy as well as their spontaneous flair for song structures. Hymnal melodies and raw noise stand side by side: Dissonant, at times edgy guitar riffs intertwine with quirky, memorable wordplay full of free associations and tight drumming. Over its 30-minute runtime, this creates a sound cosmos that is rebellious, lively, and wonderfully idiosyncratic. Born from improvisation and written at the proverbial abyss, Glamours embodies the band's loose, risk-taking philosophy, based on the tension between strain and release. Tender self-reflection gives way to catchy, melancholic choruses on "Drunk Kids"; aimless impressions from the New York subway lead to exuberant call-and-response choruses on "Laurence Bigando"; and raging tristesse transforms into liberating, unpolished relief on "Pink Banana". Although the album is audibly inspired by alternative greats like Sonic Youth, Hop Along, Jeff Rosenstock, and Weezer, it primarily radiates the unadulterated energy that has long become My Son The Doctor's trademark – an echo of sweaty, sold-out concerts and that special atmosphere that can only be experienced live. Recorded at Mitch Easter's Fidelitorium in North Carolina, produced and recorded by Jeremy Snyder (including IDLES, Pure Adult, and Gilla Band) and with artwork by Lydia Gammill of Gustaf, Glamours offers an unvarnished look at New York indie rock of the 2020s: authentic, free from algorithmic trends, and constantly in motion.
