What is special about the Rupertikirtag (traditional fair)? The Rupertikirtag is celebrated in the tradition of a cathedral consecration festival. For over 40 years, around the name day of Saint Rupert, the squares around Salzburg Cathedral transform for five days into a stage for living customs, folk and brass music, typical delicacies, and historical rides such as the ghost train or chain carousel. The best way to visit the Rupertikirtag is in Lederhosen and Dirndl. Who was Saint Rupert? Rupert was a bishop who was given the Roman settlement of Juvavum (today: Salzburg) and who laid the foundation for today's Salzburg in 696 with the founding of St. Peter's Archabbey. He is the patron saint of Salzburg and is celebrated on September 24th.
