The Russian-Jewish narrator lives in Berlin; he can no longer visit his sick mother in Moscow because he faces arrest there. All he has are phone calls with her voice growing fainter, memories of growing up in a violent dictatorship, and the countless secrets told around the kitchen table of his parents. Especially about the lively Natalia, who once worked as a concierge in the hotel in Paris where Paul Celan lived, and who has more to say about Celan’s life and loves than research knows. Schumatsky convincingly combines his political despair over Russia’s war against Ukraine and the antisemitism at his doorstep with childhood images and a personal interpretation of Celan’s life, writing, and death. Boris Schumatsky, born in 1965 in Moscow, has been living as a freelance author in Berlin and Munich since the mid-1990s. Schumatsky’s essays on political events appear in publications such as "taz," "ZEIT," "NZZ," and "SZ." In 2025, he read an excerpt from "The One Who Flows into the Black Sea" at the Bachmann Competition in Klagenfurt at the invitation of Philipp Tingler, where he won the Deutschlandfunk Prize. Boris Schumatsky was shortlisted for the "Wortmeldungen Literature Prize for Critical Texts 2026."
