What's it about?

October 9 – November 15, 2026 Opening: October 8, 2026, 5:30 PM Finissage: November 15, 2026, 11:00 AM Starting Point The Osaka-zu Byōbu, a Japanese folding screen from the 17th century, is one of the most significant artifacts of early encounters between Japan and Europe. It depicts the life of an entire society – from rulers to merchants, craftsmen, travelers, and beggars. Today, it is kept at Schloss Eggenberg in Graz and serves as the starting point for an international art and research project between Tokyo University of the Arts and the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The project involves artists from Japan and Austria engaging with the historical folding screen and developing new works in painting, graphics, textile art, installation, video, and digital media. The project is complemented by innovative educational formats and school collaborations. After presentations in Vienna, Tokyo, and at EXPO 2025 in Osaka, the project will be extensively further developed in Austria for the first time in 2026. Why Bad Ischl? At the Museum of the City of Bad Ischl, Culture Screen takes on a new dimension. Invited artists from the Salzkammergut region, Austria, and international partner countries will create new works specifically for the exhibition. Bad Ischl thus becomes a European resonance space for a project that connects art, history, innovation, and intercultural dialogue. A lively exchange about memory, cultural identity, and societal future issues will develop between Osaka, Vienna, and Bad Ischl.
