What's it about?

Countess Margit von Batthyány had invited the local SS and Gestapo men to a so-called 'Gefolgschaftsfest' (fellowship celebration) at Schloss Rechnitz. At the same time, a mass shooting was being prepared at the nearby 'Kreuzstadel'. 180 Jewish forced laborers, exhausted from their deportation into the interior, were eventually shot by a group of festival guests. Just a few days later, Schloss Rechnitz was burned down and the countess fled from the Red Army with two companions. Her destination: Switzerland. The messengers are left behind, alone with their knowledge. Elfriede Jelinek weaves many sources together in her play. Here, one messenger stands in for all. A maid without a mistress? The mistress as a maid?
