The repetition of a bass motif combined with improvising melodies produced numerous masterpieces during the Baroque period. The form follows a relatively rigid pattern – fixed elements are strung together. Despite free melodic development, unity is maintained, larger structures are held together, and a slide into formless fantasy is prevented. In the Renaissance, strict adherence to the pattern was still maintained; in the Baroque, guidelines are relaxed in favor of theatrical effect – the music gains in drama, variety, and intensified emotions.
