What's it about?

The musical France experienced an unprecedented engagement with the music of the Bayreuth master after the scandalous performance of the "Tannhäuser" in 1861 at the Paris Opera, often described with the term Wagnérisme. Few French composers were as influenced by Wagner and especially by "Tristan" as Henri Duparc. The first part of the program features melodies by Duparc, all showing a clear harmonic influence from "Tristan". The second part presents songs in which Wagner himself engaged with the music of his Tristan. Mezzo-soprano Hermine May and pianist Manuel Lange invite the audience into the Wagner world. The audience will experience the awakening of an insatiable longing and passion, the emerging desire to escape reality and finally find redemption in the Liebestod.
