Max Nagl, saxophone, composition Martin Eberle, trumpet Phil Yaeger, trombone Georg Vogel, piano Gregor Aufmesser, bass Max Nagl is a "maverick" of the Austrian jazz scene, who has repeatedly attracted attention with original projects in the past. For an Austrian radio series with the ironic title "Hausmusik" (House Music), the saxophonist recently designed chamber jazz for a quintet line-up that does without drums. Three wind players (Max Nagl, trumpeter Martin Eberle and trombonist Phil Yaeger) plus piano (Georg Vogel) and bass (Gregor Aufmesser) present fifteen Nagl pieces, cast in elaborate arrangements, plus a composition by Anthony Braxton. The musicians represented here are all established as luminaries of the Austrian jazz scene. The improvisations are actually just decorative embellishments – the focus is on the refined compositions, each held in a different mood. Nagl's concept knows no precedents. From afar, the Jimmy Giuffre 3 (with Bob Brookmayer and Jim Hall) greets, Anthony Braxton's music of the 1970s is a point of reference, church hymns, salon, variety and circus music also resonate. Pastoral sounds are not avoided but sought. Often the music is played restrainedly to muted, at other times the accelerator pedal is pressed hard, which then furiously whirls the different melody particles around. Solos are tailored to the spirit of the respective piece. This music has no place for ego trips. Everything is geared towards the sole goal of optimally staging the composition.
