A Revisor (inspector) is coming to town! He is supposed to check the work of the authorities. Since almost everyone here has something to hide, a lot must be concealed and the town must be made to appear perfect for the high visitors from the capital. The residents see ghosts and mistakenly believe a young traveler named Chlestakow is the announced Revisor. Out of fear of punishment, they try to bribe him with various gifts to appease him. Chlestakow gratefully accepts the misunderstanding and lives like the proverbial worm in the apple. He enjoys the increasingly higher bribes, boasts about invented successes, and even proposes marriage to the mayor's daughter. Led by local politicians, efforts to impress the supposed inspection authority become increasingly absurd and ridiculous, setting off a mad comedy spiral that spins faster and faster. Gogol's play was written in 1835 and criticizes corruption, abuse of power, bureaucracy, and the gullibility of people. Any similarities to a small town like the one here are, of course, purely coincidental!
