What's it about?

by Nikolaj Gogol THE INSPECTOR GENERAL adapted by John von Düffel after a raw translation by Natascha Görde Directed by Christian Himmelbauer In a nameless Russian provincial backwater, there is great excitement. An inspector is coming to town! He is to review the work of the authorities. Since almost everyone here has something to hide, a lot must be covered up and a perfect little world must be feigned for the important visitor from the capital. The residents see ghosts and mistakenly identify a young traveler named Chlestakow as the announced inspector. Fearing punishment, they try to bribe him with all sorts of gifts and appease him. Chlestakow gratefully accepts the misunderstanding and lives like the proverbial pig in clover. He enjoys the ever-increasing bribes, boasts of invented successes, and even proposes to the mayor's daughter. Led by local politicians, the efforts to make a good impression on the supposed oversight body become increasingly absurd and ludicrous, setting a mad comedic spiral into ever faster rotation. Gogol's play was written in 1835 and criticizes corruption, abuse of power, bureaucracy, and the gullibility of people. Fortunately, any similarities with a small town like the local one are therefore completely to be ruled out from the outset!
