What's it about?

Behind the magnificent facades of Steyr's main square, there are quiet treasures of the old town – historic arcade courtyards with centuries-old charm. Created during the golden age of iron trade, they formed the heart of the citizen houses and served as economic, work, storage, and living spaces. The narrow plots of land host trade houses, mostly from late Gothic and Renaissance periods, with front houses, side wings including courtyards, and back houses, which still shape the cityscape today. Artistic arcades, stone columns, vaults, old stone floors, richly decorated facades, as well as wrought iron doors and grilles give these complexes their distinctive character. Many courtyards are barely visible from outside and reveal their magic only upon entering. They testify to former prosperity and are among the most atmospheric, often overlooked places in the city. As cool retreat oases, they are gaining importance now more than ever.
