What's it about?

The Musikfestival Steyr, under artistic director Prof. Karl-Michael Ebner, will bring the American Tribal Love-Rock Musical HAIR to the Schlossgraben stage in summer 2026. The musical Hair originated in New York in 1967 and is considered the first major rock musical in history. It reflects the spirit of the late 1960s – a time marked by protests against the Vietnam War, the emergence of the hippie movement, and the call for peace, love, and freedom. At its center is a group of young people – the so-called Tribe – who rebel in New York against war, racism, social constraints, and political authority. They live by the motto “Make Love, Not War” and seek a life in harmony with nature and themselves. Central themes are freedom, identity, sexuality, and the rejection of the establishment.
