What's it about?

IRIS What does it mean for a woman that experiences are inscribed in our bodies, over generations and centuries? How do we ourselves participate in a history in which violence is continually perpetuated? And how do we escape it? This is what Laura Freudenthaler's new great novel tells. Iris is a writer, she travels a lot, in Europe and beyond. She finds moments of consent in the encounters she makes. Moments of affirmation in a life that often moves on the edge of exhaustion. Back home, she reports on these travels, and Anton listens to her and, in turn, shows Iris the photos he takes as an artist with faulty cameras. Her relationship with Anton (as with other men) is based on agreements. She and Anton share many things, including a desire for sexual play with violence and submission. While Iris's imagination begins to ignite with the history of the witch trials, memories from her childhood increasingly push to the surface. Until finally, her arrangement with Anton experiences a deep shock. Laura Freudenthaler debuted in 2014 with "Der Schädel von Madeleine". For her novel "Die Königin schweigt" (2017), she received the Förderpreis zum Bremer Literaturpreis, and in 2018 it was awarded as the best German-language debut novel at the "Festival du premier Roman" in Chambéry. For "Geistergeschichte" (2019), her second novel, she received the European Union Prize for Literature. In 2020, she won the 3sat-Preis at the Days of German-Language Literature in Klagenfurt for her text "Der heißeste Sommer", and in 2024 she received the Anton-Wildgans-Preis.
