What's it about?
MAHO sales exhibition, 2nd floor, free admission Margit Hofer-Schlucker is a fan of the unique fabric designs of the Lower Austrian weaving company Backhausen. And so she managed to secure valuable fabrics shortly before the company's closure. She uses these to create her own Backhausen collection under the label MAHO, making bags. A selection of the works, produced by true handcraft, is available in November at the Pop Up exhibition "Backhausen" on the second floor of the mük. Sales exhibition "Backhausen" In the MAHO Pop Up exhibition, craftswoman Margit Hofer-Schlucker presents bags and backpacks made from high-quality leather and fabrics from the Backhausen company. The timeless designs, often in black and white, were partly designed around 1900 by artists such as Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann, Otto Prutscher, Dagobert Peche, Otto Wagner, and others, and woven by Backhausen in high-quality furniture fabric quality. Beautiful from the past Since 1849, Backhausen GmbH has produced furniture and decorative fabrics, initially in Vienna, and from 1872 in Hoheneich in the Waldviertel. Backhausen was also a court supplier of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, weaving fabrics, carpets, wall coverings, etc., for the interior decoration of the Hofburg, the Court Opera House, later the "Fledermaus" cabaret, and much more. Starting in 1903, the company began a close collaboration with the artists of the Vienna Workshop and implemented their designs. Over the years, Backhausen collected more than 3,500 original designs from around 300 artists. The archive, consisting of 11,000 individual objects, was made available as a permanent loan to the Vienna Leopold Museum by the son of Louise Kiesling, the last owner of Backhausen. In 2023, after the death of Louise Kiesling, the company was finally closed. After 170 years, an era of art craftsmanship in Austria came to an end.
