The history of German-language literature is a story of misunderstanding between Austria and Germany. For this reason, we invented DöF, the German-Austrian friendship. This new format for discussing books promotes mutual understanding and reduces intercultural differences. This time, Beate Tröger, one of Germany's leading literary critics, is coming to us. She works for the country's major newspapers, moderates events, and is also very knowledgeable about poetry. For our discussion, Beate Tröger has chosen the recently published novel HOLUNDERHOLZ by Norbert Scheuer. A typically German book? Probably also in the sense that the author narratively embarks on a journey through the tangled paths of a post-war family story. A typically Austrian work can rightfully be called the new collection of stories by Graz-based author Clemens J. Setz. MEIN LEBEN ALS NOISEBAND ventures to the edge of society and depicts outsiders, loners, and quietly suffering individuals. The book has just been published and was nominated by Klaus Kastberger, a literature professor from Graz who actually hails from Gmunden, because it fits so well into the series. Birgit Birnbacher, the 2019 Bachmann Prize winner and one of Austria's most important authors, has nominated the novel DIE MANSARDE, a classic of Oberösterreich (Upper Austria) literature. It is the last novel by Marlen Haushofer, which is presented to us here. A laconic, witty, and at times downright profoundly malicious marriage novel that showcases the author's literary craftsmanship at its peak and was far ahead of its time, as you will see!
