What's it about?

Gundega Graudiņa is a sound artist, performer, and educator based between Linz, Austria, and the Latvian seaside. A classically trained guitarist and musical nomad, she blends tapes, voice, lute, other plucked string instruments, and digital processing into dynamic systems where each element influences the output of others. Gundega Graudiņa presents the Hummotron, an instrument she built while studying at Tangible Music Lab. Combining humming and the legacy of tape instruments in its title, this system allows her to control tape playback speed with her voice. Performing with it, Gundega explores the space between tape collages and dense, abstract textures. Marco Donnarumma is an artist, stage director, inventor, and theorist. His work confronts normative body politics with uncompromising counter-narratives, where bodies are in tension between control and agency, presence and absence, grace and monstrosity. Working interchangeably as a sound and visual artist, performer, choreographer, and theater maker, he presents his work on stage, in concert halls, museums, and galleries. He is best known for using sound, AI, biosensors, and robotics to turn the body into a site of resistance and transformation. Named a pioneer of performing arts with advanced technologies by Der Standard, he has presented his work in thirty-eight countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas and has received numerous awards, including the 1st Prize at the Guthman Musical Instrument Design Competition 2012, the Prix Ars Electronica’s Award of Distinction in Sound Art 2017, the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education’s Artist of the Science Year 2018, a Digitalive Award 2018 by Romaeuropa Festival with Margherita Pevere, and a Hyundai ZER01NE Creator grant in 2024. He was one of ten finalists for the Falling Walls Foundation Breakthrough of the Year 2026 in Art & Science. Donnarumma writes on music, performance, and technology, integrating aesthetics, feminist studies, and critical theory with scientific research. His writings are published in ACM Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Music Journal, Frontiers in Computer Science, Performance Research, and cultural outlets such as Hyperallergic and Furtherfield. ‘Biophysical music’ is a term originally coined by Marco Donnarumma in 2011 in various writings and mailing list conversations. It refers to live music pieces based on a combination of physiological technology and markedly physical or gestural performance. In these works, the physical and physiological properties of the performers’ bodies are intertwined with the material and computational qualities of electronic instruments, with varying degrees of mutual influence. Musical expression thus arises from an intimate and often unpredictable negotiation of human bodies, instruments, and programmatic musical ideas. In this event, Marco will perform the first two pieces for biophysical music he created in 2010 and 2012, Music for Flesh II and Ominous, the latter commissioned by ECPNM, the European Conference of Promoters of New Music.
