"We all come from Gogol's Overcoat," bowed author Fyodor Dostoevsky in reference to the novella published in 1842, which for many subsequent Russian writers became a key work. The story revolves around the clerk Akaki Akakiwitsch Bashmachkin, who earns his living as a copyist in a ministerial department in St. Petersburg. His modest and lonely, but not unhappy, everyday life is entirely filled with writing. When the purchase of a new overcoat becomes necessary, unrest enters his fixed routines: although Akaki has to save money to afford the garment, the acquisition opens up a completely new perspective on the beauty of life. However, the joy is short-lived: during a nocturnal robbery, Akaki's new overcoat is stolen — a shock that destroys him. The Austrian actor Karl Markovics brings to life Gogol's equally touching and biting social critique. The Eggner Trio provides the 'sound of St. Petersburg': Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 1 was composed in 1923 in the Russian metropolis, and the Piano Trio No. 2, composed twenty years later, premiered here in 1944.
