Andreas Rainer, known as the Wiener Alltagspoet (Viennese Everyday Poet), collects quotes and quirks from Viennese daily life for over 300,000 followers on social media. His view of the city of grand stages focuses especially on the small alleys, coffeehouses, subway stations, and supermarkets where comedy and tragedy meet daily. After years of successful anonymity, he ventured onto the stage for the first time in 2025 — and with success: all dates were sold out. Using the most popular quotes from the past eight years, he tells the story of the Wiener Alltagspoeten, explains why he is only recognized in Graz or in swim trunks, and presents the most beautiful examples of the literary genre of stairwell notes. He also attempts to develop a guide on how to survive the most livable city in the world. How can it be that Vienna is simultaneously the most livable and the unfriendliest city in the world? Why do we have the leisure to waste the whole day in a coffeehouse but panic when a second checkout is needed with three people ahead of us in the supermarket? Through images, texts, and quotes from Viennese daily life, Andreas Rainer paints an evening picture of a city where people throw around splendor while the world is already ending twenty meters away.
