The great industrialist Herrenstein, 87, has been confined to a wheelchair since an accident. He lives with two employees in a stately apartment on Vienna's Opernring, overlooking the State Opera. Vienna is unbearable to him, so he packs his bags, intending to escape to Altaussee. Or to Semmering. Neither Semmering nor Altaussee is more tolerable to him than the city. Because the English Queen is coming on a state visit, various acquaintances invite themselves to Herrenstein's place to see the Queen from his balcony. It is suspected that this cannot end well. Elisabeth II. is Thomas Bernhard's penultimate play and the one he did not see performed during his lifetime, thus also a kind of legacy, as it traverses Bernhard's entire theatrical cosmos – from high comedy to deadly despair.
