What's it about?

On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, Austria Theater Werke, in collaboration with the Amateur Theater Association of Upper Austria (OÖ), presents the current production "König Lear" at the Schauspielhaus of the Linz Landestheater. With König Lear, Austria Theater Werke brings one of the great human dramas to the stage of the Tribüne Linz. The story of the old king, who divides his kingdom and is blinded by flattery, is over 400 years old – and remains more relevant than ever today. It deals with power and honesty, the desire for recognition, loyalty, betrayal, and the question of whom we can truly trust. Our staging deliberately sets the action in the present day. The language remains faithful to Shakespeare, but costumes and appearance bring the characters into our world. This creates an immediate view of conflicts we know all too well: families breaking under expectations, people unwilling to hear the truth, and a system falling apart due to greed and deception. The focus is on Lear, whose fall from power leads to a journey of realization and vulnerability. The fool plays a special role alongside him: he is the voice of truth in a realm that does not want to hear it. Also, Edmund's intrigue and the quarrel of the sisters show how much the struggle for influence and love can change people. An intense theater evening about power, humanity, and the late realization of what truly matters in life.
