What's it about?
How does one look back on thirty years of band history? From afar, the view resembles a vast jungle of deep life. For us, the Sportfreunde, it is less inhabited by venomous snakes and dangerous multi-legged creatures, but rather by friendly jungle beings. Devoted to life, searching for stories and discoveries. Behind almost every tour day are funny experiences, joyful embraces, great celebrations, and ever-growing stories that become deeply rooted over the years. Records and tours become high plateaus of memory, celebrations sometimes decades later turn into mammoth stories of 'Do you remember back then?'. Friendships, alliances, delicate plants, or simply large-pored potatoes. In every corner, every branch fork, the scent and beauty of festive life hang. Sometimes painful searches and often happy resolutions. What becomes hubris for one becomes normalcy for the band. Standing on stage and having tens of thousands sing a song that slipped from our fingers in the gritty rehearsal room: no problem, it's normal. One rides home on a scooter, we in the rolling house, no problem, it's normal. The music becomes a backstage pass into the hearts of strangers, who thereby also somehow become friends, and this happens time and again. That remains beautiful and one can never get used to it. Being in a band, I can recommend to everyone. Whether with or without music, that doesn't matter; the main thing is, you give it your all together and not alone! FLO It all started with the 'Wunderbaren Jahren' (Wonderful Years). The times when self-discovery broke through in rebellion, defiance, coolness, mod-shuffle, and wandering around. And with the idea of putting three not entirely similar musical preferences under one band context. Before the first count in the Spartan rehearsal room in 1996, Jack Kerouac, Big Muff distortion, some Germering school form, and definitely the idea of enormous loudness haunted our minds. 27 minutes later, the 'Wunderbaren Jahren' were born, and the knowledge that whatever musical direction might come, this is a raw manifesto of our adolescent existence. That remains forever. It became the motto of our lives. And much more was to come. From performances in dark cellar rooms before three curious people to halls filled with ten thousand enthusiasts. From special quirks like World Cup hits, MTV Unplugged, horizon-expanding video shoots, records made of wood/gold/platinum, reading tours in opera houses, to the 'normal' madness of a band with unforgettable tours in the arms of the best crew of the universe. From being a supporting act for Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Grönemeyer to opening for bands like Ash, Nada Surf, Franz Ferdinand, and Kaiser Chiefs. Everything included. From the always supportive and driving management to the always integrable social engagement. Against creative drought, against detractors, against mood makers, but always with the knowledge that what we do logically cannot please everyone. Who can do that, except Florian Wirtz? With the tools and background of a radio play, two EPs, ten albums, millions of concerts (for example Eggenfelden, Neustrelitz, Hamburg, Tashkent, Madrid, London, New York, etc.) and the privilege of combining profession and vocation, we bow deeply to our listeners. Muchas gracias grande for dancing, singing along, and feeling with us! We just want to say that you are the greatest for us. And that has been since 30 wonderful years! Let’s go!
