Christian Tetzlaff: Infinite Bach
What's it about?
Brucknerfest Linz 2026. "Not Bach! Sea should he be called: because of his infinite, inexhaustible wealth of sound combinations and harmonies." With these words, Ludwig van Beethoven is said to have expressed his admiration for Johann Sebastian Bach. Even if this saying was probably only attributed to him by posterity, it nevertheless perfectly captures the special fascination that Bach's music still exerts today. Christian Tetzlaff explores the hint of infinity hidden within it in the Old Cathedral. The program features the famous Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, which Bach composed during his time as Kapellmeister in Köthen. It is possible that he even performed the complex works himself as a soloist at the Köthen court. Here, infinity and finitude lie close together: many a chorale quotation revolving around the themes of death and resurrection is hidden in the polyphonic-contrapuntal structures of the Sonatas and Partitas.
