What's it about?
In September 2026, the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York will mark their 25th anniversary. In response to this world-historical event, which triggered a global emotional reaction primarily through media appropriation, Robert Menasse wrote an essay a few months later about the attack as a collective "shock, world, and media event" and related it to the formative childhood experience of John F. Kennedy's assassination and the memory of the assassination of Chilean President Allende on September 11, 1973. How is a collective shock remembered, how is it processed? His own childhood memories lead to a reflection on society's and the media's handling of such historical events and how they are anchored as global memories. Some time later, the essay developed into the narrative "Die amerikanische Brille" (The American Glasses), in which, however, the historical event is charged with subjective memory and childhood feelings, and which makes a young couple stumble over relative truth and interpretation with their coexisting worldviews. Robert Menasse, born in Vienna in 1954, studied German language and literature, philosophy, and political science and received his doctorate in philosophy in 1980. His works have been translated into numerous languages and have received many important awards. Most recently, "Die Lebensentscheidung, Novelle" (Suhrkamp) was published in 2026.
