What's it about?

Women wear traditional costume in Upper Austria. Each generation wears its own dress, yet there are lines of development that persist over decades and centuries. Upper Austrian women have always been curious about novelties in their choice of clothing, which they gladly adopted as far as their means allowed. However, they remained within region-specific traditions, which are expressed in details. After the end of dress codes in the mid-18th century, a distinct Upper Austrian clothing tradition was able to develop. In addition to the regional suit, a traditional costume also developed for Upper Austrian women, which continues as the regional costume and is now to receive contemporary impulses.
