Museum Alte Textilfabrik, Weitra - WORKING AND LIVING WORLDS OF THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY

Sunday 1 NovemberMuseum Alte Textilfabrik · niederoesterreich

What's it about?

Using machines and equipment from the weaving industry, the technology of the work processes and the development of weaving are demonstrated. The economic situation of the textile industry in the 19th century as well as the social contrasts between the world of workers and the factory owners are discussed. Where 100 years ago, looms, printing tables, and embroidery machines were in operation, visitors are transported into the everyday work life and living environment before and around 1900. The tour through the museum vividly illustrates the technology of individual work processes, the interplay between home and factory work, the economic situation of the textile industry, and the social differences between the world of workers and factory families. Special exhibition 2026: WOMEN OF THE 1920S AND THEIR FASHION. This exhibition explores the profound societal changes of the 1920s from the perspective of women – told through their clothing. After World War I, the role image of women changed dramatically: political participation, professional activities, and a new body consciousness also influenced their outward appearance. The fashion of this time is an expression of new beginnings, emancipation, and cultural rebellion. The aim is to immerse visitors in the lifestyle of the 1920s through original clothing, textile objects, photographs, films, historical documents, modern art, and interactive stations – with a special focus on the role of the textile industry and the female working life in factories like the one in Weitra. The Museum Alte Textilfabrik has the Austrian Museum Quality Seal! The permanent exhibition 'Textile Working World' can be visited in addition to the special exhibition at the Museum Alte Textilfabrik, with or without a guided tour. School classes and children’s groups are very welcome. Our newsletter: www.textilstrasse.at
