What's it about?

On Sunday, September 27, 2026, hundreds of monuments across Austria will open their doors to the public free of charge. Under the motto "Monuments: Value for All," the historic Palmenhaus in the Gmünd Castle Park will also host a discovery tour between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, exploring the connection between the past and the future. The distinctive building was constructed in the second half of the 19th century under Archduke Sigismund of Austria. It was originally used for cultivating and displaying special and rare plants. With its early historicist architecture and its location in the English landscape park, the Palmenhaus remains an important part of the historic ensemble and an architectural highlight of the Waldviertel region. After its renovation in the early 1980s, the Palmenhaus was mainly used as an event venue. Now, a new chapter begins: in preparation for the Lower Austria State Exhibition 2028, the building is being further developed and prepared for future use. During the Day of Monuments, visitors will gain insights into the planned redesign, the future use of the Palmenhaus, and its role in the 2028 State Exhibition. This event vividly demonstrates the value of monuments for everyone: they shape places and identity, make history tangible, and show how historic structures can be sustainably developed.
