Hiking along and with the Train, Opening of the Railway Hiking Trail; Pilgrimage on Rails

What's it about?

With the last warm rays of sunshine, we steam through the late summer Waldviertel landscape between Zwettl and Schwarzenau in the morning and afternoon. During this extended weekend, which includes the National Day, we have themed the event around 'Hiking along and with the Train,' including special steam train rides. The route between Zwettl and Schwarzenau is well connected with hiking trails, and a new addition is the recently established railway hiking trail between Zwettl and Schwarzenau, which will be officially opened on this day. The grand opening of the Zwettl-Schwarzenau railway hiking trail takes place during a special train ride at Großglobnitz station from 9:36 to 10:10. Our train stops at all former stations or stops, allowing everyone to hike part of the route as they wish and reboard the train at any of the former stations or stops. Of course, this can also be done by bicycle, which we are happy to carry for free. Another focus of the day is the 'Pilgrimage on Rails,' organized by Fritz Schipper and others: in the afternoon, a steam train takes participants from Zwettl to Schwarzenau, accompanied throughout by Chaplain Manuel Sattelberger. In Schwarzenau, pilgrims visit the church dedicated to the Heart of Mary in Schwarzenau. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is also the 'Patroness of Austria,' fitting for the National Day. After a short service with thanks for our beautiful and safe homeland and a prayer for a good and united future for Austria, participants return to the station and take the train back to Zwettl. The provisions can be enjoyed as an agape on the train, with the buffet car offering various delicacies. Departure from Zwettl at 9:15 and 14:25; departure from Schwarzenau at 11:15 and 16:30.
