With the Nympheas – Pictures of War, Pümpel expresses his dismay at the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. In predominantly dark pictorial spaces, floral-looking forms or hinted flower buds appear, not as naturalistic depictions, but as charged signs between morbid decay, fragility, and the latent possibility of blossoming. The Lamentations also elude a one-dimensional interpretation; they show blossoms without reference to a botanical reality, rather they convey sensibilities and moods, are testimony to a holistic aesthetic that includes an-aesthetics. Between poetic reduction and penetrating clarity, these works are testimony to a "subversive power of the aesthetic," as Pümpel himself says.
