Twelve-year-old Karli moves with his family into an Alpine hotel where his parents are fulfilling their dream of owning their own home. While exploring the former grand hotel, he discovers in an old freight elevator the possibility of time travel – and suddenly lands in 1938. There he befriends the Jewish guest girl Hannah and the shoeblack boy Georg. However, Karli conceals what he knows about this year and why it would be vital for Hannah not to return to Berlin. When Georg is wrongly accused of theft and dismissed, the three try to find the real culprit.
