The Gansl-Essen (roast goose dinner) is one of the most beautiful culinary traditions of Austrian autumn. Around St. Martin's Day on November 11, many inns and heurigen (wine taverns) celebrate the roasted goose — crispy roasted, with golden-brown skin, juicy meat, and classic side dishes such as red cabbage and potato dumplings. The municipality of Emmersdorf an der Donau is picturesque in the Lower Austrian Strudengau, directly on the south bank of the Danube opposite Melk — an area with a long tradition of culinary inns.
