What's it about?
CONCERT - 100 Miles Performing a 'Tribute to Miles Davis' is a significant challenge. He may not have been the most virtuosic jazz trumpeter or the greatest jazz composer. Pianist Richie Beirach even said: 'Miles only wrote some ditties.' But what made him so charismatic that he was surrounded by such an aura for decades? Miles Davis was undoubtedly a 'culmination point' and 'catalyst' in jazz. He recognized the right trends and gathered the right musicians around him. Wayne Shorter in the 1960s, Bill Evans a decade earlier, and Gil Evans even earlier composed far more than just 'ditties' for the Miles Davis band. As a bandleader, Davis was great and mysterious. According to Herbie Hancock, he often gave no instructions or spoke in metaphors. Yet this motivated his bandmates to perform at their best, which Davis, as a 'sound architect,' could assemble into a whole. In this tribute '100 miles' (Miles Davis' birthday will be 100 years in 2026), the musicians are honored, as well as Joe Zawinul, who around 1970 was involved in Miles Davis' transition to jazz rock. The biggest challenge of this project was the selection of the 'lead voice.' Which instrument could capture the special 'hauch' (touch) of Miles Davis' trumpet sound, especially with the 'Harmon Mute'? Bertl Mayer, an experienced harmonica player, takes on this task. He is used to improvising over complex chord schemes. Robin Gadermaier on electric bass and Wolfi Rainer on drums provide the rhythmic foundation. Andreas Mayerhofer, arranger and mastermind, ensures the typical sound of the Davis era with the vintage vibe piano and guides the evening with exciting stories and details.
