What's it about?
The career of the devil begins with a career break. He falls out of God's grace – not because he is morally evil, but as a result of a power struggle he loses. It almost happened that God would have been overthrown. What would a world order look like then? In countless fairy tales and legends, the devil is told about, sometimes he is even a positive, helpful fellow like in the fairy tale of the sooty brother of the devil. He is a gambler like in the legend of the master builder Puchsbaum, who gets involved with the devil to complete St. Stephen's Cathedral's south tower. In the figure of Mephisto in Goethe's Faust, he is the quintessential enlightened intellectual. We humans love him and fear him at the same time; he is the accuser and the destroyer, the colorful and the black – all in one. Even the most modern times have not been able to banish him. Michael Köhlmeier tells stories while Hans Theessink accompanies the tales with guitar sound and voice.
