What's it about?

The Melk sub-camp of the concentration camp was located in what is now the Birago Barracks in the abbey town from April 1944 to April 1945 and was anything but invisible. Many of the concentration camp prisoners had to perform forced labor in the form of tunnel construction in the neighboring village of Roggendorf near Loosdorf. To get there, the prisoners marched daily through the town. At the so-called "Melk stop" – a provisional platform – they were loaded into wagons and transported to Roggendorf. In addition to the daily route through the town, there were numerous other points of contact with the Melk population. For several years, speaker Melanie Grubner has been conducting life history interviews for the MenschenLeben project of the Austrian Mediathek with contemporary witnesses of the Second World War from the surrounding area. Numerous interviews contain accounts of observations around the Melk concentration camp, which will be the focus of this thematic tour.
