The narcissistically disturbed miser Harpagon has an almost erotic relationship with his wad of money buried in the garden. Love, however, is merely a business matter for him. He is always hostile towards his environment. His greed reaches astronomical proportions and his humanity is not even discernible.He terrorizes his family, especially his children Elise and Cleante, whose marriage plans he thwarts and intends to instrumentalize for his own benefit.He has promised his daughter Elise to the wealthy, old Anselme; for his son Cléante, a rich widow is intended. For himself, he has his sights set on the young Marianne, who, however, secretly loves Cléante.
