The Return of the Nervous Age, renowned contemporary historian Oliver Rathkolb provides well-founded answers and insightful assessments. Before the First World War, geopolitical upheavals, economic dislocations, and technological changes overwhelmed societies and political elites. And today? Polarization, irrational politics, and the feeling of marginalization once again fuel the longing for the "strong man" and simple, often violent solutions to complex problems. Rathkolb shows how the pursuit of power, greed, and the disregard for democratic rules give rise to authoritarian structures – and why these dynamics are once again alarmingly relevant. Oliver Rathkolb, born in 1955, was a long-time head and professor of the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Vienna. He is the author of numerous publications on Austrian and international contemporary and cultural history, as well as the editor of the journal "zeitgeschichte", chairman of the Vienna Institute for Cultural and Contemporary History (VICCA) and of the scientific advisory board of the House of European History in Brussels.
