What's it about?

Paris Murder Mystery (original title: Vie privée) Director: Rebecca Zlotowski Writer: Anne Berest, Rebecca Zlotowski Cinematography: George Lechaptois Music: Robin Coudert Cast: Jodie Foster, Daniel Auteuil, Virginie Efira, Mathieu Amalric Genre: Drama, Crime, France 2025, with original language and subtitles, 107 minutes. The American psychoanalyst Lilian Steiner (Jodie Foster) is a prominent figure in the Paris therapy scene. When her patient Paula (Virginie Efira) unexpectedly takes her own life and Lilian refuses to accept the rapidly spreading theory of suicide, she begins—along with her ex-husband Gabriel (Daniel Auteuil)—a search for clues that will uncover the secret of the deceased. The fact that Paula's husband Simon (Mathieu Amalric) ejects the therapist from the funeral is just the beginning of the entanglements that the audience can enjoy unraveling. The fragility of human relationships and psychological states is a central theme for Rebecca Zlotowski. "I'm not even sure if I have much to say about hypnosis and psychoanalysis. It's just a playground for me to delve into our deepest desires, fantasies, and denials". In "Vie privée," the French director, born in 1980, guides us with a lot of comedic finesse for the obvious but unspoken, and with psychologically charged imagery—such as Lilian repeatedly ascending and descending spiral staircases reminiscent of "Vertigo"—through a narrative about the fear of painful self-awareness and its consequences. The star duo of Jodie Foster and Daniel Auteuil, who are mismatched yet perfectly coordinated, lead a cast that includes many notable figures of French cinema. Foster, a graduate of the Lycée français in Los Angeles, playing in a French film in French this time, is a feat few other Hollywood divas can claim.
