Weinzierl, around 1751 A young musician, in his early twenties, arrives at Weinzierl Castle, the summer residence of Baron Carl Joseph von Fürnberg. His name is Joseph Haydn. The Baron, a music lover, asks him for a new work for four string players. What emerges in these rooms is Haydn's first string quartet – an inconspicuous beginning that will change the history of music. From this one composition, over decades, grows the clarity, the balance of form and emotion, that would later be called Viennese Classicism. At this very location, HAYDN × 4 returns to the beginning – to show where this string quartet led in Haydn's compositional work. A composer on the path to Classicism From Weinzierl, Haydn's handwriting develops over decades: from the chamber music dialogue of the four string players to the mature, colorful language of the solo concertos for winds, brass, and strings. Four of these concertos meet for the first time in a single performance this evening – a program idea that has not yet existed in this authentic location. What Haydn began in Weinzierl extends far beyond his own work: He laid the foundation for the form that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart also adopted, and opened the path that Ludwig van Beethoven would later follow. Three brilliant composers, three distinct personalities – and yet all three based on what began at Weinzierl Castle some 275 years ago with Joseph Haydn's first string quartet. The evening program: from the delicate to the radiant The order of the four solo concertos deliberately follows an arc: from the delicate, intimate to the radiant, festive sound. Thus, the evening itself becomes a narrative of Haydn's own musical development. 1. Oboe Concerto in C major, Hob. VIIg:C1 Performed by the exceptionally talented 16-year-old Lara Stangl – a delicate, youthful work, presented by the young soloist at the beginning of her career, just as Haydn stood at the beginning of his career in Weinzierl. And she also comes from Eisenstadt in Burgenland, where Haydn celebrated his great successes at Esterhazy Castle. Haydn's Oboe Concerto has a richness of contrasting moods and melodies, is extraordinary and unparalleled in classical music. 2. Horn Concerto in D major, Hob. VII d:4 Performed by Hermann Ebner. The principal horn player of the Wiener Akademie Orchestra always hits the right note on his horn and has performed many horn concertos as a soloist nationally and internationally, including with the Camerata Academica Salzburg, the Camerata Bern, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Mattheus Ensemble Paris and others. The Horn Concerto is full of radiant energy and brilliance, extending to very warm tones, and its finale has a captivating, dance-like, swinging conclusion that ends the work with playful lightness and technical fireworks. 3. Cello Concerto in D major, Hob. VII b:2 Performed by Wolfgang Panhofer. The cellist was described by the press as the second Rostropovich. An international, first-rate musician from Vienna, who made his debut in Carnegie Hall in the USA and was enthusiastically celebrated there. As a member of the Trio Amadeus Wien, he received standing ovations in the Wiener Konzerthaus. Haydn's Cello Concerto in D major is virtuosic, already shows strong influences of Viennese Classicism, places high demands on the cellist, and is a masterpiece by the great composer. The 3rd movement is one of the most popular cello concerto finales ever. 4. Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major, Hob. VII e:1 Performed by Georg Weirer. Born and raised on a farm in the mountains of southern Lower Austria, he regularly substitutes in the most renowned Austrian orchestras and opera houses and, in addition to his teaching activities at various music schools, performs numerous concerts with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Strauss Festival Orchestra Vienna at home and abroad.
