Heckentag 2026: Hedgerows as reliable habitats for pollinators After winter, many wild bees, butterflies, and hoverflies begin searching for food. Especially during this time, when only a few plants are flowering, native hedgerows are of particular importance. With their early blossoms, they provide valuable pollen and nectar, creating essential conditions for a successful start to the year. At Heckentag 2026, native shrubs, trees, and hedgerow packages made from regional seed can be ordered again from September 1st, bringing diversity to gardens and simultaneously creating valuable habitats for pollinators. The importance of hedgerows is demonstrated by the nationwide Austrian research project "Heckenleben" (Hedgerow Life) by the Verein Regionale Gehölzvermehrung. The studies show that pollinators depend on a continuous supply of food. Native hedgerows can fill supply gaps because different tree and shrub species bloom at various times and complement each other throughout the year. A crucial factor is the origin of the plants. "Woody plants from regional seed are part of the local ecological fabric. When origin, plant species, and flowering time match, habitats that remain reliable for pollinators throughout the year are created," explains landscape planner and tree expert Klaus Wanninger. The Verein Regionale Gehölzvermehrung has been working according to this principle for over 30 years. The seed is collected from wild-growing woody plants in the respective regions, propagated, and returned to their region of origin. This results in plants adapted to the local climate, soil, and landscape. A native hedgerow is thus more than just a design element in the garden. It provides food, connects habitats, and directly enhances biodiversity right at your doorstep. Orders can be placed online from September 1st to mid-October at www.heckentag.at. Pickup will be on November 7th at several locations in Lower Austria, or delivery is possible as an alternative.
