What's it about?
Investigative journalist Lio Laksch sneaks into the exclusive 'Sanatorium zur Gänsehaut' to uncover the not entirely flawless methods used there. Here, in the almost painfully picturesque landscape, the rich and beautiful gather to become, if not richer, then at least more beautiful. A menagerie of curious characters comes together: a tone-deaf opera singer, a beauty blogger, a pharmaceutical entrepreneur, and a doctor who, besides rejuvenation treatments, is dedicated to the naked mole-rat, an animal that holds the secret of immortality. And Lio? She also feels the pull of the dark lake, 'like a beauty mark in the landscape,' ink-black and without reason. Ferdinand Schmalz tackles the theme of beauty and youth obsession with his usual sharpness, more relevant than ever in our digital mirror world where aging is a mortal sin. The fear of decay also prevails in Austria; each year, the number of cosmetic surgeries increases, not always legally and not without danger. Christina Tscharyiski takes on Schmalz’s texts, which playfully explore the depths behind wrinkle-free faces.
