The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui
What's it about?
To mark the beginning of Patricia Nickel-Dönicke's artistic directorship, twelve directors from this and the upcoming season, together with the entire ensemble and the newly founded city ensemble, will bring "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" to the stage. 70 years after his death, Brecht continues to influence contemporary theatre forms. Having become world-famous through his alienation effects, as well as through songs, narrator's comments, dance, puppetry and film, the multifaceted nature of Brecht's work will be re-examined at the start of the season. And what play is better suited for this in these times than "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui"? During the rampant economic crisis in Chicago, the small-time crook Arturo Ui enters the milieu of vegetable dealers. Through a dubious business model, he guarantees the "Cauliflower Trust" the preservation of their income, thereby gaining access to the city council and the extended circles of Chicago's political elite. Once united in shady dealings, the vegetable dealers must watch as Ui gradually establishes the law of the strongest on the streets of Chicago as well as in daily political business. Driven equally by his greed for power and by his insatiable gangster colleagues, Chicago soon becomes too small for Ui, and he discovers the profitability of war as the ideal export business. Brecht's historical farce meticulously reconstructs the mechanisms and patterns with which fascist ideologies eat their way into a state and its civil society. At the end of the play, in historical parallel to the annexation of Austria in 1938, there is the ultimate breach of international law. The clearer and more familiar the individual stages on Ui's path appear, the more decisively the question arises: Why does the middle of a society remain silent here and allow these developments to happen? Does it secretly believe it can profit from the rise of a gangster? All over the world, as in Brecht's "Arturo Ui", power-hungry narcissists are currently becoming politicians, art and the press are experiencing attacks on their freedom that were thought to be overcome, and international manners from the gangster era of the last century are establishing themselves. In Europe too, the questions are becoming increasingly urgent as to how the rise of anti-democratic forces can still be stopped. The collective engagement with Brecht's original work is therefore also a positioning for coexistence, without which democratic living together is not resilient.
