What's it about?

European Jazz Workshop 2026 - Vienna: "New concepts of the 2nd Viennese School: Artistry in Rhythm". In an initial phase in February, the participating students were introduced to the topic and shown ways in which the "Second Viennese School" can be creatively incorporated into their own compositional work. In the second phase in September, the students' original compositions will be developed for the European Jazz Workshop Orchestra and performed at the concert in Theater am Steg. The European Jazz Workshop 2026 at mdw – University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna takes the "Second Viennese School" with its twelve-tone technique developed by Schönberg, Webern, and Berg as a starting point. The focus is on how these compositional principles can be applied in today's large ensemble jazz compositions – both as a direct means of expression and as a source of inspiration for new aesthetic approaches. Under the theme "Artistry in Rhythm," it aims to demonstrate that even complex serial materials can be transformed into a rhythmically grooving concept. This also establishes a connection to jazz tradition, particularly to Stan Kenton, whose ensemble incorporated techniques of the Second Viennese School in an impressive manner, as done by composer Bob Graettinger. "Artistry in Rhythm" also brings the theme back to Vienna, where Mathias Rüegg has released an album under this title with the Vienna Art Orchestra, dedicating a piece to each European capital. Participating teachers: Markus Geiselhart (Vienna), Markus Harm (Vienna), Helge Sunde (Oslo), Morton Halle (Oslo), Steffen Schorn (Nuremberg), Roberto Bonati (Parma), Néstor Giménez (Barcelona).
