Please understand that acceptance for blood donation may be possible up to 30 minutes before the end of the blood donation event. In Austria, a blood unit is needed every 90 seconds, totaling up to 350,000 units per year. The challenge is mainly due to the fact that blood units are only viable for a maximum of 42 days, and the demand for different blood groups varies greatly. This can lead to supply shortages. Everyone of us has the power to prevent this, because with each blood donation you help another person to recover. Blood cannot be replaced by anything! Human blood is one of the most important medicines in emergencies. Despite advances in medicine and technology, there is still no artificially produced substitute. People between 18 and 70 years old who meet certain medical and legal criteria can donate blood. An official photo ID is required for donation. NEW from 2025 in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland: make an appointment and save lives! With the new appointment reservation system, blood donations can now be planned conveniently, and waiting times can be reduced. A link for appointment booking can be found on all appointment notices and directly at www.blut.at/termine. Simply click on the appointment link for the desired blood donation, select the time and possibly the date, and fill in a few personal details. Then choose whether to receive a reminder via email or SMS the day before the appointment – and don’t forget to accept the privacy policy by checking the box. Finally, click on “Reserve appointment now” and save time on site! Since plans can change, booked appointments can be rescheduled at any time. Assistance is available at the service number 0800 190 190 – or just come spontaneously to any blood donation event: the staff on site will answer all questions and assist with booking an appointment.
