In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of Temari art and create their own Christmas-themed Temari balls. The course is specifically suitable for beginners. Temari are traditional Japanese hand-embroidered balls, originally considered good luck charms, crafted with fine threads. Today, they combine craftsmanship with aesthetic design. During the workshop, participants will learn step-by-step how to build a Temari ball—from wrapping the base form to preparing for embroidery. The focus will be on two classic patterns, which will be combined on one ball: the chrysanthemum pattern and the Hishi pattern (diamond motif). This results in a decorative, Christmas-themed Temari ball. No prior knowledge is necessary; materials and tools will be provided by the instructor. Martine Roovers: retired craft teacher. Studied at the Atelier for Fine Arts in Antwerp. Course instructor and lecturer, with an exhibition of her Temari balls at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna in 2021. www.temari.at Material fee: 15 euros. Registration by November 20, 2026.
